Wow - back in paid, live theatre, from my computer via Zoom. Done in a stripped back style, as though in a rehearsal, Claire Foy and Matt Smith are even shot in a social distancing acting style, in two Zoom boxes. It means it has a minimalist feel: you get the fuzziness of the microphones when the actors hit them sometimes and yet it isn't distracting.
The two box shot works well as this is a dialogue about relationship, about a couple, about having over not having a child, about commitment, about what the future holds and expressing emotions or not, and everything in-between.
Such a real feel to it; it doesn't feel like a stagey dialogue but a real couple talking; it means you get really emotionally invested in their ups and downs, and what happens to them. One of the best and most moving plays I've seen, analysing ethics, morality, even what it means to be a man or a woman and how we relate to each other.
It covers some tough relationship topics of loss and love and betrayal, so be careful if these are sensitive topics for you. But so worth seeing for Claire Foy and Matt Smith's fantastic acting range and their happy dancing and social distancing kiss at the end! I also love the fact that theatre traditions are kept in place - my computer keeps counting down how long I've got until the performance starts and requests me to take my seat as the play is about to begin! It can be hard to concentrate because it's easy to forget you're watching live theatre on your computer or device of choice, but very worth doing!
