Quarantine Theatre: National Theatre at Home: Coriolanus

Updated: Aug 21, 2021

Edgy and energetic - Tom Hiddleston is a blood soaked Coriolanus who moves from war machine and family man avoiding power, whilst badgered into it by his glory and power hungry Mum and society, to taking power at any cost and rejecting his family. On a par with the Bridge Theatre's Julius Caesar, this modernised Roman-esque play has an excellent cast who make it real and live for a contemporary audience. All the emotions are there! Even the stage cleaners are integrated into the action...

It's a shame that deep male friendship has to be implied through snogging and that Coriolanus' move to the 'rebel alliance' is almost sexualised, but I think this was a thing in contemporary Shakespeares of the time of this production. Quibble on behalf of men as friends aside, a powerhouse production! Also prepare to be Sherlocked by Mark Gatiss! and how quickly the city turns from loving and then hating Coriolanus.
