Dance @ Home: Our House To Your House - Peter and the Wolf

Updated: Aug 21, 2021

Ballet with a twist? Why not try the Royal Ballet's Peter and the Wolf. Not just for kids! I'm sure I've seen more Brothers Grimm-type versions involving axes, wolfish stomachs and Grandfathers wielding axes or being eaten by wolves - but I may have mashed this up with Red Riding Hood!

This version features the story narrated alongside a ballet interpretation and Prokofiev's fantastically emotive music. Worth seeing alone for the dancing wolf who is both terrifying and comedic; also the dancing meadow and lake (both reminding me of the perm and colour that goes wrong in Grease's 'Beauty School Dropout'). Grandfather is a bit of a disappointment because he's less Grandfatherly, and more part Harry Potter wizard and part evil magician from Swan Lake in a very swishy cloak; nevertheless he is an excellent narrator and gets to join in the action! And his cloak really does swish!

Worth staying in for and awaiting the surprise ending! (Tho part of me was wondering what Katie Prince's Zoonation company would do with this material with a mashup of ballet and hip hop theatre?)

(Part of the Royal Opera House's OurHousetoYourHouse series of free streamed performances).
